Spring 2023 is HERE!

Most of us are excited for Spring by now. Today is the first day of spring and as I stood by my kitchen window this morning taking in the sound of the birds singing I realized that I forget just how much I missed their song! With Spring here we feel the tug to get outdoors, prep the flower beds and with the sudden explosion of color (hallelujah) have spring pictures taken!

But where to begin? I'm a photographer in the northern Virginia area and thought I'd break down some tips for planning your spring pictures so that you're in the know and ready to go. I'll keep this relatively short so you can get the facts without reading an encyclopedia because who has time for that? You've got spring to celebrate!

Book Photographer

First you'll need to find a photographer and book ASAP. Spring is a busy time for many and schedules fill quickly. Sign a contract and pay your retainer to reserve your date/time.

In today's day you're going to find one on every corner. Some tips:

-Be sure to review their website and portfolio, read reviews and in particular evaluate the consistency of their work. If possible, look at a full gallery.

-MAKE SURE their photos aren't stolen. It's sadly common practice for new photographers to take photos from pinterest and use them for advertising. Aside from being illegal, it's horribly misleading. Be wary!

Decide Location

Your photographer should be able to guide you in this area, but will often give you multiple choices. An experienced photographer will know where the sun will be at the time of your session and what lighting conditions to prepare for. If your session is midday, for example, you'll likely want to choose a location with shade. They will often also be keeping tabs on what is blooming where and should have some recommendations based on the date and time of day you book your spring pictures!

Plan Outfits

Your outfit matters SO much more than you may realize. Professional photographers are accustomed to giving wardrobe recommendations and truly love to be asked for advice in this area because they recognize just how important a role coordinating outfits plays in the end result!

Pro tips:

-Plan layers! This is especially important for spring pictures. You can take layers on and off for variety but also have a warmer option if the day happens to be on the cooler side.

-Don't forget shoes! It's easy to forget especially with kids because their sizes change quickly. Try the shoes on beforehand.

Don't Be On Time

Wait, what? That's right. Don't be on time. Be early. Take it from someone who does this all the time. There are *always* last minute hair adjustments, traffic on the way, someone needs to use the restroom, or someone's shoes managed to slip off in the car (#toddlerlife).

So forget planning to be on time. If you plan to be 15 minutes early you'll more likely be on time! And with a session planned around daylight and potentially between other sessions, it's important.
